Report: Canucks prospect Jonathan Lekkerimäki headed to Vancouver ‘for 8-10 days’
Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

It appears that the mystery surrounding Vancouver Canucks prospect Jonathan Lekkerimäki’s immediate future has finally been resolved.

Since his team was eliminated from playoff contention on Monday, it’s been a “wait and see” period as we anticipated his next move.

On Friday morning, Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie and Dhali — The Team reported that Lekkerimäki will leave Sweden and head to Vancouver.

Let’s not get too excited, however. The trip is expected to be brief, lasting only 10 days before he returns to Sweden for the World Championships.

While there’s a possibility he could sneak in a game or two, it’s more likely that this trip is simply for a visit, which is perfectly fine.

This short and sweet visit will offer him the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of his future home and immerse himself in a playoff-bound environment. There is an opportunity to participate in a few practices to learn the new systems and work hand-in-hand with coaches like Daniel and Henrik Sedin.

Unfortunately, the timing isn’t ideal for his likely destination, as the Abbotsford Canucks are currently on an extended road trip that won’t see them return home until the end of March. Their final road game is scheduled for Saturday, March 30th.

Nevertheless, it’s a positive move to make the trip and adjust to the speed before taking on the world’s best at the WC in May.

The 19-year-old is coming off a stellar SHL season, in which his 19 goals ranked fourth league-wide and his 31 points led all U23 players.

After contributing a primary assist that led to a victory in game one, Örebro failed to score over their next two matches, eliminating them from the best-of-three playoff series.

Lekkerimäki is anticipated to make a permanent move next year and is expected to compete for a roster spot out of camp in Vancouver.

With that said, the new Canucks regime has shown a commitment to its developmental plan, showing a willingness to follow the proper steps on the developmental ladder.

Considering this, a stint in Abbotsford, whether it’s long or short-term, appears to be the likely starting point.
